(Studio LK, whilst with The Prince’s Foundation) South Hams District Council commissioned an Enquiry by Design in South Devon, through which to develop a sustainable masterplan for this site.
This project will create a new community to the east of Plymouth. When complete, it will have up to 5,500 new homes, plus a High Street, four schools, employment, shops and community facilities within a layout that reflects the varying topography of the site.
It is structured as a series of walkable neighbourhoods - where residents are within a 5-min walk from daily shopping needs.
The open space strategy includes 207 hectares of green spaces among the neighbourhoods, and a public park on the south of the site the valley.
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) will take advantage of this green network, creating a series of lakes in the Sherford Valley.
Having received a BRE Exemplar rating, the masterplan sets new standards for sustainability in terms of resource efficiency and carbon reduction.
