The Studio LK team, whilst with Seymour Harris Keppie, undertook the scope of work that included designing, planning, acquiring building permits, preparing tender, site supervision and interior design.
The building is located adjacent to a housing estate, and aims to match the scale of the houses, whilst creating a presence as a community building along Holtdale Approach.
The building has been designed to fit into the urban context, as opposed to being an object building. The main entrance is from Hotdale Approach into a ‘spine’, from which three blocks of classrooms adjoin this spine from the west, and from which the main hall and other school facilities adjoin the spine from the east.
A central amphi-theatre style courtyard provides a space for outdoor performance. Playing fields and parking are located to the west of the school.
Colour and texture were important considerations internally with regards to providing comfortable spaces for the visually impaired.
