The Studio LK team, whilst with The Prince’s Foundation, developed a masterplan and vision for a sustainable neighbourhood in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, based on traditional ment patterns of the region, while also considering modern requirements and aspirations of local residents.
The project aimed to demonstrate the values and relevance of traditional urbanism and architecture in modern Saudi Arabia. Offered as a mixed-use community model respecting traditional values, the development was also to serve as a tool to raise awareness of traditional methods of design and construction.
The plan itself was developed demonstrating a strong urban form based on characterisation studies carried out previously, to establish traditional design principles, upon which other future settlements in the region may be based.
